GRE marks distribution : demystified

GRE marking range : 260 to 340 + an AWA score out of 6

5 sections: 1 AWA (2 essays), 2 Quant, 2 Verbal, 1 (Quant or Verbal, unscored). 40 marks for each section: Quant and Verbal.

The sections alternate between Quant and Verbal. The unscored section can come at any time. Do not try to brace for it or predict it.

Let me add a couple of important things that I learnt when I was preparing for the GRE:

  • Your first sections for Quant and Verbal each are most important in deciding your score. If you score below a certain level (which I think is 15) then your paper difficulty decreases by a notch. This drastically impacts your final score.
  • Your unscored section can be anywhere, I repeat anywhere. I had mine as the first section! Be prepared.
  • Moving away from a perfect score, getting the first few questions wrong (18,19/20 etc) will pull your score down significantly. I believe a 17/20 in the second section of Quant tends to yield a 163/170.

Please note, that these views are only things that I’ve noted. There is no proof from ETS’ side. Take them with a grain of salt.
